First Episode
It’s amazing what can take place once you get moving on a project or passion of yours. Sometimes, all it takes is getting started. Getting started with The Barkada Podcast has opened my mind, has allowed me to re-explore my family, friendships, interests, Filipino heritage, and what’s going on in Oshkosh and the surrounding community. I believe this is the perfect avenue for sharing those aspects with those of you who are interested in listening and following the journey of The Barkada Podcast.
Since recording the first episode, I have found myself getting lost in the research of topics related to what’s currently happening in the Philippines, along with it’s history, and have thought about numerous guests that we’d like to have on the show. I’m already thinking of what we could be doing better after watching the first episode and am excited to see where this thing will go. I’m excited to see and hear people’s stories, especially of those people that I haven’t connected with in a long time, and to hearing new ones from new friends that will be joining us on the show.
We’ve got Patricia, my wife, lined up to be on a show here in the near future…as well as our friend Nate Boyce, who shares many common interests with myself and Tim. We’ve got some great things lined up that will provide some interesting conversations, and throw some fun interesting facts along the way. We’ll catch you soon! - Peace and Love, Marlo
The Barkada Podcast
After nearly two years of talking about bringing The Barkada Podcast to life, we are only a few days away from making that happen! The idea of coming up with a podcast happened during a span of gathering with friends (pre-COVID of course), and I was thinking, you know what? Our stories are pretty cool and I bet you there would be others that would enjoy listening to our conversations. Then I thought that I had some pretty neat connections in my life and that people should hear how awesome my friends are. So came the idea of creating a podcast, The Barkada Podcast.
Where did the name come from? Barkada is a Filipino term used to describe a group of close friends. Like, that’s my Barkada! Those are my close friends! Those are the people I hang with…I remember back when I was a child, overhearing my parents talk about my best friends, they described them being in my barakda.
I also wanted a different way to help promote and expose my Filipino culture and life in my hometown of Oshkosh, Wisconsin, and in surrounding communities. We’ll have different segments where we will talk with guests from the community, and heck, maybe some bigger names down the road. Manny Pacquiao? Apl de Ap from the Black Eyed Peas? Arnel Pineda from Journey? Why not? But baby steps first, right?
I asked one of my friends, Tim, if he wanted to join me on the show and he immediately was excited about the idea. We had a different name at the time (Mocha Blanco Podcast), but, as we thought it about it some more and what kind of topics and uses we wanted to get out it, The Barkada Podcast was the name that would be carried on!
We’re looking forward having you join us on this new uncharted adventure while you get to know us, and as we get to know you. We can’t wait to see how this journey will evolve over time. Thanks for following and listening!
Peace and Love,
Marlo
